Come inside the Coffs Harbour Butterfly House. One of the first things you will notice is that both the temperature and humidity are quite high. These conditions are essential for the health and contentment of the species of butterfly on display.
Almost instantly you will be surrounded by hundreds of live Australian butterflies. You can share their world as they fly, court, mate, sip nectar or rest in the light showing off their fascinating colours and patterns. The butterfly may even mistake you for a flower and land on your head, shoulders or arms.
Our knowledgeable guides will be on hand to answer any of your butterfly questions and to share the experience of the butterfly life-cycle with you - a scene that is constantly unfolding in our breeding area.
The Butterfly House is an enclosed glasshouse approximately 21 metres long and 13 metres wide. It is one of the few fully enclosed, climate controlled butterfly houses in Australia and the only public display of live butterflies
of its kind operating in New South Wales. The average daytime temperature is 29 °C with a minimum night time temperature of 17 °C. A gas furnace provides heating and we can lower the temperature with five evaporative coolers. The ten 400 watt metal halide lights help to replicate summer day length in winter and brighten the display on cloudy days.
The Butterfly House first opened in February 1995 and provided the Coffs Coast with yet another unique attraction in the area. We, the present owners, took over the running of the Butterfly House in September 2000 and since that time have trialled around 50 species of Australian butterflies.
We consistently display 400 live Australian butterflies all
year round with a focus on up to 17 species. Seasonal variations mean that not all species are available for display at all times, however we usually have at least 12 different species flying at a given time.
